Past hurts create future hurdles
Not one of us can make it through to adulthood without some cracks caused by difficult moments and hurts. Some of these hurts are monumental, difficult to overcome; others are a little easier to maneuver around and leave behind. Some hurts arise, we believe we have overcome them, and live our lives not realising how much they impact major decisions and life choices.
Though Catch Me a Cowboy, my latest novel, is a jovial, light-hearted story, at its core is a depth of emotion. Emotion formed and morphed by hurts experienced while young. The story explores how we can carry that ancient pain with us our entire adult lives. Pain that is always sitting in the background, rising to the surface when the right conditions are met – specifically, the condition of falling in love.
The hurt I explore is when an important person in your life is unfaithful.
Whether that person is your boyfriend, your husband, or your father. A person who you looked up to as an example. A person you loved and trusted. Who then obliterated all of your perceived understanding of what a man is and who a man should be. You are left feeling betrayed, bemused and your reality shaken. Your core beliefs are ripped away, and from that moment onward you stumble and claw at trying to find solid ground again.
For people who haven’t been through this, it may be easy to dismiss. But for those who have experienced this, you would be well aware that you are forever changed from having gone through it. Some find strength and a way forwards. Others find it incredibly difficult to find peace and to trust completely ever again. Emily, the main character in Catch Me a Cowboy, is one of those people. And it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that I drew on a lot of personal experience for this character.
But like with all romance novels, there is a happy ending. And I believe we can find that in our own lives too. Catch Me a Cowboy is a story about healing. About coming to terms with these ancient hurts, realising the bigger picture and finding out what is most important in life. Love.
Love trumps all.
